Message from the Dean

We are at an extraordinary point in human history. Unimagined just a few decades ago, emerging breakthroughs are pushing us to new limits of longevity. However, as we live longer and add to an already ballooning global population, we face formidable foes such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and a changing climate.

Life is interconnected: for most of us a healthy mind requires a healthy body, and a healthy planet. The Ayala School of Biological Sciences discovers solutions for the mind, body and world so we not only live longer we live better! Our goal is a planet without disease that is sustainable and diverse, with renewable biofuels, and with sufficient food for all its people.

Biology, the science of life, will transform our lives and our world, providing solutions to many of today’s grandest challenges. Biological solutions are needed to overcome the global challenges that we face in health and well-being, sustainability and biodiversity, food production, and energy, all of which will affect our economy and society.

Training the next generation of biologists is essential for this mission. It’s why we place an intense focus on constantly enhancing our academic curriculum. Partnerships with local industry and community members are invaluable in helping us educate students to become the world-changers of tomorrow.

This website features news and information about and for our Ayala School faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community at large. Steve Jobs said, “The biggest innovations of the 21st century will be the intersection of biology and technology.” With that in mind, we invite you to join us as we make discoveries that transform our lives and the world around us for the better.

With warm regards,

Frank M. LaFerla
